Application Requirements

Overview

1. Applicants must be citizens of a country or region other than China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) with a valid passport and comply with the relevant regulations set by Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of the PRC.
a) If an applicant acquired his/her non-Chinese citizenship at birth and one or both applicant’s parents held Chinese citizenship (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) at the time of the applicant’s birth, the applicant must satisfy both of the following requirements:
I. The applicant must have held a valid foreign passport or certificate of nationality for at least four years (attained before April 30, 2019).
ii. During the last four years (between April 30, 2019 and April 30, 2023), the applicant must have lived outside of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) for at least two years (subject to the applicant’s entry and exit records, if an applicant has stayed outside of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) for nine months or longer period within one year, it shall be equivalent to one year).
b) If an applicant was a citizen of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) and has acquired foreign citizenship through an immigration process, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:
I. The applicant must have held a valid foreign passport or certificate of nationality for at least four years (attained before April 30, 2019).
ii. The applicant must provide documentation of renunciation of his/her Chinese citizenship.
iii. During the last four years (between April 30, 2019 and April 30, 2023), the applicant must have lived outside of China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) for at least two years (subject to the applicant’s entry and exit records, if an applicant has stayed outside of China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) for nine months or longer period within one year, it shall be equivalent to one year). In case of any dispute, the Chinese shall be the governing and prevailing version. 2. Applicants are expected to graduate from high school.

3. Applicants shall not have criminal records, be in good physical and mental health, and be friendly to China.

General Admissions Requirements

All applicants are expected to graduate from high school and fulfill one of the following qualifications.

(For 2023 intake)

  • GENERAL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

    Graduate from high school; and one of the following qualifications.

  • American
    Patterned
    System
    (SAT/ACT/AP)
    · ACT Plus Writing with composite score of 27 or above; OR
    · SAT total score of 1290 or above; OR
    · SAT Reasoning Test with a combined score of 1800 or above (Pre-March 2016, in one sitting); AND
    · (i) American College Board Advanced Placement (AP) in three subjects, each with a score of 3 or above; OR
    · (ii) Three SAT Subject Tests, each with a score of 600 or above (Pre-July 2021).
  • British
    Patterned
    System
    (GCEAL/IAL)
    · Passes in at least three Advanced Level (AL) subjects in the GCEAL/ International AL examinations; OR
    · Cambridge Pre-U Diploma; OR
    · BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma
    · Applicants may present Cambridge Pre-U Principal courses in place of Advanced Level (AL) subjects
  • International
    Baccalaureate
    IB Diploma

English Language Admissions Requirements

English is the medium of instruction at HKUST(GZ). Applicants are expected to demonstrate their English language proficiency prior to admissions. Applicants who seeking admissions to undergraduate programs may satisfy one of the qualifications below.

(For 2023 intake)
